El Buen Comer
When you dine at El Buen Comer, you can expect to eat real Mexican food. You will not find burritos on this menu; instead, you will find flavors from the home kitchens of Mexico City.
Isabel Caudillo, the chef and owner, is a graduate of La Coccina’s food incubator program in San Francisco. This nonprofit empowers women, immigrants and people of color who are talented in the kitchen launch their own food business, which is notoriously difficult to do in San Francisco. El Buen Comer is her brick-and-mortar project, and she pours her heart in the dishes she serves to her patrons.
Isabel is known for her guisados, which are slow-cooked stews made with meat or vegetables. These dishes take hours (or even days) to prepare, which is evident in the depth of flavor of every dish. Each of these stews is served alongside rich and beans.
All the dishes are made from scratch and the base of the tortillas is organic masa. No matter what, you have to order a stack of the homemade tortillas and the sides of salsas and guacamole.
We also ordered the jicama with oranges and tostadas (open-faced fried tacos) for appetizers. All of the guisados are meant ot be shared family-style. We shared the mole con pollo (chicken) with a red/brownish sauce; the pork stew in a sauce made from pumpkin seeds, tomatillos, cilantro and epazote; shrimp dish; and a vegetarian summer squash dish with a fresh cheese.
This is a lovely neighborhood spot that is great for small and medium-sized groups alike!
